To Wong Foo is a campy feel good film for queers. In the tradition of classic road trip movies, drag queens Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes), Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) take off in a convertible on a cross country adventure. Destined to compete in the biggest drag pageant in the country, their car breaks down in a small town. Among the town folk they pass as women and their glamour starts to rub off on the locals. Like all good drag queens, their presence transforms a previously drab environment. Their brand of femininity subverts small town gender roles and takes issues like domestic abuse head on. With mega stars like Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze involved, this film brought pageant drag to mainstream audiences.
